Frequently Asked Questions
What dance styles do you offer?
We offer Preschool Intro to Dance, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Acro and Highland.
My child has never danced before, what class should they enrol in?
Everyone is welcome at MAD! Our teaching team can guide you on the grade that suits your child best and new students are welcome to try a class free of charge to see if it is a fit for them.
How old do you have to be to dance?
We welcome dancers into our preschool programme from 3 years old. Our syllabus classes then follow on from 5 year old beginners through to adult level.
What are your term dates?
Our term dates align with the NZ Ministry of Education dates each year.
Is there dance on public holidays?
Usually yes. We will always notify parents ahead of time if they should expect to have class.
Do I need to wear a uniform?
Yes, our uniform is compulsory. It’s smart and comfy and ensures everyone is ready to move.
Can you connect me with pre-loved dance gear?
We encourage our families to support each other. It’s great to sell your child’s good condition items they have outgrown and perhaps pick up second hand replacements. This is especially recommended for our Highland families as speciality highland gear is an investment and well cared for so that it may change hands. Families often choose to list their items on our private MAD Facebook page.
What do I need to wear for Highland? Where do I buy it?
As with all classes, Highland has a uniform for lessons. All our highland dancers perform on stage in competitions. Once a dancer is ready for competitions they will require a Highland kilt costume followed by Irish and Sailors costumes, depending on the age of the dancer. These are an investment and it is important to purchase correctly. Your teacher will guide you on sourcing these.
I need a solo or duo costume. How do I find one?
There are many groups selling second hand costumes on Facebook and Trademe. New costumes can be purchased from dance supply stores. When you have something in mind, ask your teacher for their approval before investing.
How do I pay fees and when are they due?
Fees are invoiced each term and payable within a fortnight. If you seek an alternative arrangement please see your teacher.
Do I re-enrol each year?
Yes, but all families are emailed at the beginning of the year to confirm your child’s enrolment.
What if my dancer wishes to stop?
We would hate to see you go! But if your heart is taking you elsewhere, you just need to contact us by email and we can go from there.
Why do we learn exam syllabus?
The exam syllabus for each dance style is crucial for building skill, technique and performance. For this reason, we encourage all students to work towards taking their exam.
Dancers wishing to be considered for Troupes & Crews must attend all of their exam classes and their exam in order to adopt and perfect proper foundational technique.
What happens if a class is cancelled?
Announcements are usually made via email or on Facebook. In the event of a cancellation, a makeup class will be scheduled or fees adjusted.
Can I miss a class?
Unfortunately we are unable to catch students up should they miss a class. If they are unwell or it is unavoidable, we encourage them to use the portal to practice what they have missed.
How do I join a troupe or crew?
Troupes & crews are open to any dancer who is achieving well in their exams and has shown dedication. Generally our minimum age depends on the crew. As a guide we have ages 9+ dancing in competition groups. Our elite troupes and crews are by audition and have a higher exam mark threshold. Please contact us if your dancer is keen.
How do I get my dancer into competitions?
Competition is a great way to extend your dancer’s skill! Your teacher can guide you on how to get started. It is up to the soloist or duo’s family to enter their chosen competitions independently as a MAD dancer, but your teacher can guide you on which competitions they will be attending with troupes, so you can all support one another.
My child wants to compete solo or in a duo. How do they get one?
We have several senior students who love to teach and choreograph! There are also routines that are on-sold by dancers who have outgrown them. Routines are taught over 4 sessions and a fee covers the teaching time, music and choreography (including any changes).
Visiting choreographers, here to run workshops, are sometimes available to book with for choreography for new solos and duos.
If you would like to get started in solos or duos, please get in touch with one of our modern dance directors and they can guide you with what is most suitable for your dancer. Contact Fleur for Hip Hop and Krystal for Jazz or Contemporary.
When is the annual show?
Our annual production is always in the third weekend of November. It’s the highlight of the year!
What happens in show season? Are there rehearsals?
It’s an exciting time, packed with learning new routines and costume fittings. Usually once exams are complete, classes get right into learning their production pieces. Commitment to attendance is essential as fittings take place during class and formations are decided early on. For a full month prior to the show, it is very busy and a new schedule is released detailing rehearsal timings at the studio and then the theatre itself!
Does my dancer have access to videos and music for practice
Yes, each teacher is able to load progress and/or instructional videos as well as music to our parent portal on MyStudioPro so your student can access it at home for practice.
How do I get access to the parent portal?
You will be given a login and password for our parent portal at My Studio Pro when you are enrolled. Please keep this log in safe so you can refer back to it throughout the year. It’s a great place to keep track of important dates, timetables, practice videos, music and fees. You will also be directed to sign important permission forms via the parent portal.
How do I keep track of important news?
Please make sure you follow our family page on facebook as well as our Instagram and Facebook pages. We share news and achievements across social media and important information by email as well.
